Kelso Uxlay (Poster Booth #23)
Kelso Uxlay started to explore virtual worlds via Second Life thanks to his RL partner known inworld as Dabici Straulino. Today, they share a grid that re-creates changing seasons of eastern Canada: the snowy winter, the greenery of the spring, the hot summer, and the colorful autumn. While Dabici focusses on landscape design, sound ambiance and construction, Kelso puts magics in the builds via scripting.

Frankie comes from the higher education world where she specializes in instructional systems and emerging technologies in support of learning. Frankie is also known to be a curious traveler immersed in virtual worlds for empowering learning experiences in the company of kindred spirits.
This presentation will share about the continued effort on the design and development of an immersive 3D-world reflective activity offered by the Virtual Harmony community that blends Japanese Kintsugi and ikigai principles with Henri Nouwen’s work on ‘The Wounded Healer.’ Kintsugi is a Japanese term for the art of repairing broken pottery with a lacquer mixed with powdered gold. The presenters will share how the activity helps to promote reflection on the idea that lives can become like broken pottery containing several cracks, scars, and wounds arising from painful experiences. The activity introduces ikigai principles to help promote reflection on how healing, strength, and beauty can arise from brokenness by sharing the stories of our wounds with others. Henri Nouwen’s work is highlighted in the activity by helping to promote how wounded healers can offer many positive character strengths to others involving empathy, altruism, acceptance and a forgiving spirit.

As we’ve previously established last year, art is art, whether its created in the outer world with physicals substances like paint or digitalized on a computer or words fed as prompts to an AI. And all art conveys a message, but do we want the visual of the message to be controlled by a messenger or the message to be formulated by a viewer? My new art revolution is “take full control of my art!” Come learn why and how I do this?

Bruce Gross / Cooper Swizzle (Poster Booth #13)
Bruce became drawn to 3D Virtual Immersive Environments for training after being introduced to them at a professional association meeting for trainers. Bruce realized they created opportunities for both synchronous and asynchronous trainings for learners, and offered a very cost-effective solution for companies utilizing them. He realized that 3D environments enabled better engagement for learners, and began implementing use of 3D Environments as replacements for PowerPoint slides in webinars (where he had attendees watch via the webinar screen as he explored the topics in the 3D world). And he was able to convince the company leadership to try a pilot program using 3D worlds for training as a substitute for the expensive face-to-face, week-long training marathons that had been a staple of the company leadership development.
After completing the highly successful pilot 3D leadership training series, he was able to continue and expand the 3D course offerings and subsequently ran a 5-year 3D-based training program before retiring from the company. Holding certifications in DDI®️, Forte®️, and 3D Virtual Worlds from the University of Washington (2012), Bruce brings a broad spectrum of experience in training and enjoys using and sharing knowledge gained from his 15+plus years of training experience.

Carla Kincard-Yoshikawa (Poster Booth #13)
Carla Kincaid-Yoshikawa has worked as an Organization Development and Training Consultant for many years. Working in a wide range of industries in the private, public and non-profit sectors, she has designed, developed, and facilitated training programs on a wide array of topics including leadership development, strategic planning, change management, software navigation, new hire orientation, sexual harassment, and stress management. A deep curiosity about how people learn, change and grow has created a core resource for her ongoing work in Learning and Development.
She became interested in the use of 3D platforms after her son introduced her to 3D games as she recuperated from an injury. She saw them as powerful tools with significant capabilities that would enhance online/remote learning and began exploring how to use them as part of a comprehensive blended learning solution. Carla continues to use many technologies in her work, relying on skills developed creating and facilitating face-to-face training, as well as self-paced e-learnings and traditional remote learning (e.g., Zoom, aka webinars) to design effective learning

We will explore the concept of ‘soft skills’ training in the context of personal growth and professional development, showing how 3D environments offer a unique platform for this transformational journey. Soft skills corporate training, refers to topics that involve some sort of behavioral change and often involves introspection and experimentation with new, unfamiliar behaviors. Having participants operate through an avatar—which can function as if they’re wearing a costume—makes it easier for them to step into new roles, make mistakes, and learn without the fear of embarrassment. It’s a powerful way to nurture new skills for leadership, communication, team building, and even for addressing crucial topics like sexual harassment prevention.

Assumptions and biases towards the person behind the avatar may be based on the experience or lack of experience a person has with avatars in virtual spaces. While those of us who have been in virtual worlds for a long time tend to have fewer assumptions about avatars in general, a recent experience with university administration resulted in a total shutdown of a space dedicated to student mental wellness. This demonstrates that avatar bias has consequences in the physical world. We will present our plans for a research survey designed to elicit information about assumptions and biases based on experience with virtual worlds and games. This survey will be embedded in a Hubs VR room and plans to analyze that data in spring 2024 will be discussed. Finally, we will gage audience interest by handing out the URL for the Hubs VR room and asking for participation.

The presentation, “Using Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Create Content for 3D Immersive Virtual Worlds“ provides basic information about generative artificial intelligence (AI) as well as some examples of its potential use and application within the 3D immersive virtual worlds community. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) also known as generative AI or GenAI is the branch of artificial intelligence under the category of machine learning focused on developing algorithms and models to generate new content (text, images, videos, or other digital media). The presentation discusses how GenAI may be used for information sharing; storytelling; generating AI images; script writing; generating data for training; upscaling photographs; and other “thinking-outside-the-box” applications.
